For more than two centuries, 'to boldly go where no one has gone before' has been our credo. But where we now go, we know is a path walked before, in a time so long ago none of our peoples' had recorded history, let along had reached the stars. Only, down this path we know is darkness and death; a black wind whispering fear and despair, taunting us with promises of all the terrible beauty that nightmares are made of.
Our quest is a dream made flesh standing against monsters made real through our desire to rule and control - and most of all destroy - what others have created. We seek ancient powers long-buried and forgotten, hidden away from mortal hand and eye. We race against the shadows gathered around us, unseen menace demanding with unspoken threat our silent surrender to the unknown will of the those who would act in our name and without our knowledge or consent. It is deceptively easy to give into the half truths and vague assertations of an idea those shadows dare not name. We must be strong enough, desperate enough to resist that deceptive temptation, because we quest not for powers or for principalities, but to protect, to preserve that ideal we have all sworn to represent and uphold.
So much has already been lost in pain and in blood; so many have already died for the sake of what we seek. But greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. We are among the last of the warrior-poets, daring to challenge the might of the long-departed gods for whose powers we quest. Yet we do not go unprepared into this darkness; willingly, boldly, we go where angels fear to tread; to seize that one, last fragile moment - for corruption, darkness and evil only triumph when none dare to stand against them.
Respectfully submitted,
